Why didn’t I ever think of getting swatch books before?

A few weeks ago, I stopped by Brown Dog Paper’s awesome studio to check out some paper for my new business cards. It was the first time I ever had anything custom letter pressed for myself and was wide-eyed excited to meet someone who was such a paper nerd/whore. Yea, I’m talking about you Meghan.

Check out these sexy beasts Meghan made for me. I can’t stop touching these cards… they feel so amazing!

I really should have put on some lotion before I decided to let my
hand be a model.

While I was at Meghan’s studio, she delighted me with all kinds of paper options. I had never experienced someone who was more obsessed with feeling paper more than I was. I only had measly books from the bookstore, but Meghan had stacks of paper swatch books. I thought to myself, why the hell haven’t I ever thought about getting these paper samples before?

I’ve always wanted to handpick my own type of paper for my zines! I was so excited about the opportunity to finally do so. I eventually did some Googling and it led me to MohawkConnects.com. Unlike most of the paper stores I found, they give out free swatch books! You just have to pay for shipping.

When I got my swatch books in the mail, it even came with a box that I can put them in, as you can see in the picture above. I spent a good hour going through every swatch book and feeling each paper noting which ones I’d like for which future zine. I haven’t checked how expensive each paper is, the result may very well influence my decision. But that’s not the point of this post. The point is that swatch books are awesome and it makes zining even more fun for me right now!

The only complaint I have about the swatch books is that the stacks of paper are very hard to flip under my nose to smell. It isn’t as convenient as a regular book. Lame.
