Zine and Booklet Templates For Word

Zine and Booklet Templates For Word

(Post updated September 2, 2014)

Hey zine makers and creators, I have something for you that will save you from major headaches! I present to you Microsoft Word templates for 4 to 40 page zines in half size! Half sized means booklets made with 8.5″ x 11″ paper folded in half.

After Googling and searching the internet up and down, I found there weren’t many useful booklet templates for Microsoft Word so I decided to put together some of my own. I spent many hours putting this together so I hope someone out there will find it useful.

For zines with many pages, I have found that a crafts bone folder is incredibly helpful in folding the multiple pages! Maybe this will contribute to less sloppy zines? :-/

A few notes about the templates:

1. The useful and convenient part about these templates is that you can copy and paste a lot of text and it will populate into the pages in order accordingly. But…

2. …unfortunately, Microsoft Word only allows a max of 32 text boxes to link together so I had to start a new “flow text” with templates that have more than 32 pages. In other words, the text flow will have to start over after 32 pages so keep that in mind if you are copy and pasting text into the template.

3. To print the booklet when you’re done, print out the odd numbered pages first. Reorder the printed pages accordingly so you can feed it back to the printer for the even numbered pages.

4. There were very strange problems with the 36 and 40 page templates. I found that it only works as a downloadable file when I convert them into DOT files, which can be opened in Word.

Omg you’re amazing! Thank you so much for your hard work!I would’ve had to spend hours and hours trying to figure this out, on top of my day job – but your book templates here are just fantastic. Thank you for your contribution and for keeping it free.

Saw that someone commented on this about using OpenOffice, Since i’m also a user, can these DOCX files be converted to OTT templates? they are able to be converted from DOCX to DOC (which turns it into a normal open office document…but im concerned about saving, since id be saving over the original file?)

If not I guess ill just find a copy of Word lol

For anyone like me, who’s using OpenOffice, you can convert the files from .docx to .doc using various sites around the web, and they’ll still work fine, up until .dot, which I haven’t been able to figure out yet.

This is a great template, thank you so much! I haven’t successfully printed it in Word; I am using the 24 page template.
I’m sure it has something to do with printing manually back and front and selecting the right page range,
but so far I haven’t been able to print them in order to fold them correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Actually now that I use a printer than can print both sides, it worked perfectly!!!! Thank you again. It turns out that all I needed to do was “Print on both sides, Flip on Short Edge”

I am so happy to find your template, but I am having a hard time copying and pasting into the 28 page format template. When I copy and paste text into page 4, it slips into page 1. Same with page 5. Is this a problem from my computer or should I try a different template? Maybe I can add some pages on and do the 32 page template instead. Looking forward to your advice. Thanks. v

Hi, this is great! Although I am wondering how you break the link between text boxes? Some of my text boxes will not be flow and there are multiple sections to my zine so this makes it quite difficult. Thanks!

A bit confused as to how they would be folded…. and why page 2 is next to page 19 ect? Maybe I’m just being stupid but it’s baffling my head haha.

  8. 20

Sorry, but for some reason I’m a little confused. Is “page 1” the cover page? Or does this not include a cover? If it is indeed the cover, I don’t see how page 2 folds in the right way. I’m just not really sure what order to arrange my content in…

    • 21

Yes, page 1 is the cover. These are booklet templates, so it may seem odd if you’ve never printed booklets before. Test print yourself to see how it comes out. Keep in mind when you print, the even numbered pages are the “back side” of the previous odd numbered page. Does that make sense? You arrange your content in the same order that the page numbers are.

Once I can get the templates set up, it will help me on my next zine too, but I haven’t had the time to set them up. :( Word is a bit annoying to work with when setting up templates…

Hi Sinoun, you’re really great for doing this, thank you so much!! I just have a quick question, perhaps you can help?

I want to use Columns in my zine… but when I go to click on “Columns”, it is not clickable, and I’m unable to access it. Is Columns disabled in your template? Or am I missing something key in order to write in Columns? Any advice would be helpful. Thank you for everything!!

    • 27

Hi Grave, this is a really good question! In Word, you unfortunately can not create columns within in text boxes, which is what each page is. What you can do to work around that incapability is create additional text boxes and format them for each page individually. This will require extra layout work, but it will be worth it if that is the design you are going for!

I have been searching for HOURS to find something like this, thank you so much! I am curious if you ever made a 1/4 template? If not, I will more than likely be using this 1/2 template. Thank you again so much for rescuing me from the depths of the internet! :P

Hello, Emily! I’m so glad you found this helpful! :) I still plan on making the 1/4 size template, but just don’t know when. I’ve just been very busy. I hope I can before the end of this year! If you are interested in getting notifications one when I do, please consider signing up for the mailing list since that is how I will let everyone know.

Hey there! Thanks for the template. What do you think is the best way to format images into this template? I keep trying to insert them and keep having problems. Thanks!

    • 32

Hey Brian! The way I always insert images in Word is by creating a shape (typically rectangle) and choosing a fill image. Doing it this ways allow MUCH more flexibility in placement. The annoying part about doing it this way is making sure you can manually size the box accordingly, otherwise the picture will look stretched or squeezed. Hope this helps!

[…] Zine and Booklet Templates for Word by Sinoun for Anatomic Air Press. This article has templates for 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, and 40 page booklets! Since I don’t have InDesign, I used Word to make Kith Issue 01, and these templates made the process so much easier. […]

    Hi, this is so helpful!
Was just wondering whether this works with double sided printing, or whether I need to disable it for it to work?
Its probably really obvious but I can’t seem to get my head round it!

    • 40

      Hi, Livi,

Glad you found this helpful! The template is not automatically set to double sided printing. You will have to set that manually in your settings.

Does anyone know how to change the page numbers and set up so it’s not in printable form, but in a form that you can just read normally?

Hi, Josie, sorry for the delay in responding.

I’m not sure I understand your question. Each template page is set up manually so the page numbers are entered manually as well. If you want to change the page numbers, you will have to just change what is there.

Let me know if that answers your question,
